Glaurung

Description

This is glaurung, the wingless dragon from, "The Silmarillion" by JRR Tolkein.

I tried to draw him in my own way after recalling how the author described him as being a "Belly-Crawler" thus making him more lizard-like than dragon-like (As supposed to my earlier draft of him as a typical dragon) thus shorter neck, bigger head and stumpier body...but because of that while I was still trying to keep dragon-ness in their and not have him look like some fire-breathing lizard--It looks just like this. The guy who drew that sketch :iconbrokenmachine86: had a full character model design sheet on Facebook and mine looks like his and because of that I feel like I'm committing art-theft.

However I did try to make mine differ from his. Instead of having him splay his arms and legs out I decided to make them semi-erect; pushing the limbs under the shoulders and hips like a dinosaur or a mammal but only so far as to maintain non-dinosaurian reptile likeness. Also note the head. The head for Glaurung (While again similar to BrokenMachine86) has been given a frill of horns like those of a frilled lizard, and the head has a more pronounced upper upper and lower jaw, chin included, as well as a more pronounced brow ridge over his eyes to give him more of a canine face; infact my initial intention for the overall design was meant to resemble a large dog, with the mammal-like reptiles like the gorgonopsids being the biggest influence for their semi-upright mammalian posture and possible dog-like behavior that can accommodate for Glaurung.

But alas I failed...for the most part.

A very nice design. But I gotta nitpick; the face looks too friendly. This was Morgoth's favored beast, and the face here is a bit too rounded, the eyes too big and full of character. But that's my only complaint.
